1749: The Kepples arrive

This is a link to a copy of the S.S. Phoenix's log showing Johann Michel Koppel and his wife, Anna.

Of their children listed, I was aware of Maria Elizabetha, Maria Catharina, and Johann Jacob and have them in our family tree. Surely, Johann Nickel is also their child. You will notice several other Koppels onboard. Since they are all from the same area, I think it is safe to assume they are related to us as well.

Susie, I was looking for George for you. No luck!

  1. Thanks for taking a look Bev. I love to find sailors and ship commanders in our lineage.

Looks like our Keppel family has German names, for sure. But the log shows them originating in Herbitzheim, Alsace-Lorraine. I Googled that name and it is in France best I can tell. I don't know much about the migration patterns in Europe but maybe they migrated from Germany to France then to America.

  2. I looked up Herbitzheim on Google maps and Hessen, Germany where the Fousts were born and it is only 3 hour drive between the two. We may have to make a trip overseas one day - if the world ever settles down.

  3. We've been saving money to go in 8 years - on our 25th anniversary. Gary's family roots are in Germany also.
